The Women’s Council Netherlands is a collective of organizations concerned with improving the position of all women in the Netherlands. The council was founded in 1898 and since then we have collectively been working towards a society in which women and men are equal.

Who are we?

We are an association with institutional members. We connect and represent more than 50 organizations, from political women’s networks to ‘single-issue’-movements, from networks for women in business to service clubs and from young feminist initiatives to organizations for socially critical senior women. We have members all over the Netherlands who represent women from all social, economic and cultural backgrounds.

What do we do?

The Women’s Council Netherlands represents the interests of all Dutch women. Together with our members and partners we actively participate in lobbying on women’s issues. We address societal inequality with the Dutch government. We create awareness about gender inequality and highlight pressing issues with decision makers and policy makers in the Netherlands, the EU and the United Nations.

Why our work is needed

According to Dutch laws, men and women have been equal for a long time. The reality however proves to be different. Women continue to be paid less than men for doing the same work. Despite quotas in companies and political boards, women are still a minority in top management. About half of the women in the Netherlands are not economically independent, making them and their children extra vulnerable. Reports of domestic violence are staggeringly high and this subject remains a taboo. There is no attention to the difference of the female body in healthcare, even though female bodies generally require a different treatment to male bodies. Additionally, COVID-19 has shown how vulnerable women in caregiving are. These examples make one thing clear: we still have a long way to go. By working together with our members and partners, we amplify our voices. Together we stand united.
